The Golden Handcuffs – Why Gains Often Come with a Cost

This is a very specific article for discussion among astrologers and students of astrology. The points presented here cannot be generalized and should not be applied as is on individual horoscopes as is. 

In the study of Vedic astrology, the Eleventh house is the “House of Gains” (Labhasthana). It is the bhava that represents our “desires” and “hopes”. However, when this house comes under the effect of the lord of the third house, the wealth can often feel like “golden handcuffs”. The 11th house is the best upchaya house and location of any planet here will give gains especially as the age progresses. Further, natural malefic planets (krura grahas) generally perform better and are more aligned with the 11th house as compared to natural benefic planets (saumya grahas). Still, we should try to understand the concept of golden handcuffs in the context of the 11th house placement of the 3rd Lord.

The Kaama/Desire Trikon

To understand this, we must look at the kaama trikon, i.e., the Third, Seventh, and Eleventh houses. These houses represent the “world of senses”. This material triangle binds us to our courage, our desires, connections that we want to build and gratifications that we try to have.

Wealth Through Constant Effort

The Third house represents courage, valour, will power, efforts and personal initiative. When its ruler is placed in the Eleventh house of income, it signifies a life where nothing is a gift. Whether it is the Sun in Aries for a Gemini native or Mars in Sagittarius for an Aquarius native, the message is clear: wealth will be self-made, but the path will not be smooth. These individuals must continuously exert themselves and always take initiatives to secure their status. The Eleventh house is the house of gains and income. These both houses represent a thirst for money that can immerse the individual in material involvements at the expense of spiritual growth. The Golden Handcuffs: Even when this path leads to wealth this is tainted success since spirituality is reduced.

The Shadow of Success

I have looked at few of the examples horoscopes that I have been asked to consult. There are other examples covered by other esteemed astrologers in their books and articles also. These examples illustrate that this specific combination does often extract a price.

• For the Gemini native, an exalted Sun in the 11th brings financial success but leaves the native very unhappy in routine roles, often feeling a sense of unfulfillment and a sense of something is missing even amidst affluence. The native does rise to high echelons of power. However, the people around him/her are consumed by a feeling of jealousy rather than awe. It is not easy to get to spirituality though. Sun is a kroora graha and is a king among the planets. Sun does not take someone on a path to renunciation easily. Hence, the feeling of power does not go away.
• For the Scorpio native, Saturn as the 3rd lord as well as the 4th lord in the 11th can provide much property, but it can also manifest as an aloof or dry temperament that alienates others in the social circle. Virgo is not an exaltation sign for Saturn, but Saturn is still in a friendly sign as Virgo is ruled by Mercury. Sociability is already not a strong point for Scorpio lagna. Scorpio is a strong sign by itself and there is a sense of pride already. This, when added with Saturn’s restrictive 3rd drishti on the Lagna, a further sense of aloofness is created.

An Esoteric Placement or Just a Materialistic One?

Can we consider this an esoteric placement? Philosophically, this configuration seems to serve a higher purpose. By granting the individual the wealth he/she desires through exhausting struggle, there is a bitter taste for the wealth. As a result of this bitter taste, disenchantment can be produced eventually when the wealth is obtained. When material affluence fails to provide inner satisfaction, the person is forced towards spirituality. Readership of spiritual books, traveling to spiritual retreats, etc. start to attract the individual. If there are other factors in the horoscope, then this path of spirituality can definitely materialize. But the age of the individual is important, as discussed in the later paragraphs.

For the Scorpio Lagna, the Scorpio placement can definitely provide this path towards spirituality. One may be granted material success through the 3rd and 11th houses specifically so that the individual may realize its futility at the end. Once the material affluence fails to provide satisfaction, the mind is finally forced to turn its inner sight toward the spiritual path. In this sense, following the material path until it breaks the ego is often the precondition to finding real peace.

What we should also note is that the results mentioned are not visible throughout the life. These are demonstrated during the dasha and bhukti of the planets involved, in the cases considered here – Saturn and Sun. We should also note that both the planets are kroora by nature. Hence a bit of anger and impatience does get in the behaviour of the individual when the dashas operate. While Sun is rajsik and hence is action oriented, Saturn is tamsik and is slow to deal with. However, since both are not saumya grahas, the people around these individual will not find it very easy to deal with them. Sun will make the person hot tempered. Saturn will make the person dry and aloof and plain speaking although it may offend people around them. As par BPHS, malefic planets in the 11th house will definitely give money, but “the native resorts to unfair and unscrupulous methods of earning, if both benefics and maiefics are there, sometimes unjust means and sometimes just methods will be resorted to.”. The spiritual push will be more pronounced if the dasha/bhukti occur late in life. It is obvious that if the dasha/bhukti of these planets occur during the 20s or 30s of the invidual, then the person, by nature of the age he/she will be in, will be consumed by the planets and will earn money through hook or crook. However, if the person is in his/her 50s or 60s when maturity has already started to kick in, then the results mentioned in this article should be predicted.
