चालू नाम से कुंडली मिलान, कितना सही?
There is a practice in India to take the name of bride and groom and use that information for matching of the horoscope. What people do is that they take the first letter of the name, try to derive a nakshatra and then match horoscope. This practice is still used in a lot of places because the accurate information on date/place/time of birth is not available to do a proper kundali matching. In Hindi, this is called चालू नाम से कुंडली मिलान. However, what happens in present time is a what is called अपभ्रंश, which is killing a perfectly good system by ignoramuses by bringing in distortions and impurities.
This would have worked in olden times when the names were based strictly on nakshatra pada as explained in the namkarana sanskara post. Therefore, there would be backward lookup and an astrologer could derive back the exact nakshatra and pada based on the first letter of the name and then use the information to find out the exact kundali matching parameters. Even now, the practice makes sense if we do not have any other information and use the name. The person should respond to the name properly – in case of nick names again, there is a complication. While we cannot say anything about manglik dosha or other dosha balancing, but it it is supposed to give us a very good starting point.
This is a wrong practice in current times. What is also very wrong is using a proper nakshatra and pada for one person and using चालू नाम for other. If you believe in horoscope compatibility, use the proper method. Otherwise, don’t use it. I will also ask other astrologers, no matter how good they are, to avoid this practice.
