Distribution of Planetary Influence

Distribution of Planetary Influence

Established by all the base texts of astrology, the rules states that the distribution of natural benefics and malefics across the various houses (Bhavas) of a natal chart determines the balance of opportunities and impediments within an individual’s life. While the presence of benefic planets generally indicates areas of potential and favorable outcomes, the placement of malefic planets identifies specific constraints and functional challenges.

1. Classification of Planetary Nature

Application of this rule requires a clear distinction between the inherent qualities of the planets:

  • Natural Benefics: This category includes Jupiter, Venus, and a strong waxing Moon. Mercury is classified as a benefic only when it is associated with other benefic planets.
  • Natural Malefics: This category includes the Sun, Mars, and Saturn. The Lunar Nodes (Rahu and Ketu) are also classified as malefics, representing ego, fights, seperation and denial and unfulfilled desires and karma.

2. Functional Modifications to Natural Planetary Nature

A planet’s natural tendency is frequently modified by its house lordship and relative strength. These modifications have been dealt with in their own articles in this blog over the years. Do not ignore these modifications. These variables determine whether a planet functions as a practical opportunity or a functional impediment:

3. Analysis of Opportunity Sectors

Specific houses serve as primary sectors for advancement, specifically the Fourth, Fifth, Seventh, Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh houses. However, these placements do not yield entirely positive results. There are always some “disclaimers and fine prints.”

  • Jupiter in the 5th House: This placement provides opportunities for advanced education and intellectual development, but simultaneously creates impediments regarding progeny, as it prioritizes abstract principles over material expansion.
  • Mars in the 6th House: Positioned in a house compatible with its nature, Mars enables the neutralisation of opposition and debt, yet remains an impediment to physical safety due to an increased risk of accidents.
  • The Sun in the 10th House: This offers significant potential for professional authority and administrative status, though it frequently introduces impediments regarding real estate and property management via the 7th house drishti (aspect) on the 4th house.
  • Rahu in the 11th House: This configuration generates substantial opportunities for financial gain and influential social networking. However, because this necessitates Ketu’s placement in the 5th house, it creates impediments to creative continuity and emotional stability towards children. Furthermore, Rahu’s drishti (aspect) on the 7th house introduces volatility into contractual partnerships and hampers marital stability.

4. Evaluative Methodology

To reach a final judgment regarding any specific life department under Rule 4, the following objective process is required:

  1. Analyze Relationships: Determine if benefics are associated with the house in question and if the house ruler is positioned strongly (e.g., in an angle or trine relative to that house).
  2. Landlord or Tenant Relationship with Dispositor: A house can still prosper even if its own lord is weak, provided its dispositor is strong and receives positive aspects from benefic planets. The basic nature of the planet, whether it is malefic or benefic is modified by the tenant and/or the landlord based on whether you follow Shri Bhasin or follow Shri Bepin Bihari.
  3. Evaluate Aspects: Verify the absence of malefic aspects that could degrade the existing opportunities.
  4. Identify Counterbalances: If a house contains negative indicators, determine if a favorably placed Jupiter offers protection, or if the individual’s maturity allows for the mitigation of the impediment.
